At another school they might call this a “makerspace,” but at Xaverian it’s the X-Ploration Center – a hub of activity for creating, questioning, experimenting, mastering new equipment, and in general…X-ploring!
Xaverian is taking learning to a new level with its X-Ploration Center. The mission of this space is two-fold; to provide students and faculty with increased opportunities to engage in project-based learning through design, creation, and experimentation, and to expand on the faculty’s traditional “pedagogical tool belt.” Working together with the X-Ploration Center staff members, faculty and students will partner in learning that enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills ripe for real world application.
A plethora of new technology and equipment provide the foundation for this space, including laser cutters, 3D printers, table and band saws, a drill press, vinyl cutters, a CNC router and sewing machine, a green screen, video recording equipment, and more. Not only will students learn important skills with this technology, but the X-Ploration Center provides them increased ownership over their learning, with their natural curiosity driving engagement and mastery of subject material.

Xaverian offers a college-preparatory curriculum of the highest caliber with state-of-the-art technology and resources that are the ingredients of the best schools and colleges. Admittedly, our academic experience is challenging and not all the answers will come quickly, but help is always there. Xaverian teachers are a phenomenal resource in a student’s journey to master the material. Their unique teaching methods match the way boys learn best, allowing students to feel comfortable and confident in and out of the classroom. Xaverian teachers employ cutting-edge technology, research, problem-solving, collaborative learning, and critical-thinking activities to help each student maximize his potential.
Approximately 96% of Xaverian teachers have advanced degrees, including many who have multiple master’s and Ph.Ds. They can help students identify obstacles to their learning, as well as the opportunities ahead, advising them on the best course based on their unique abilities. Our engineering students build bridges with straws to understand mass-to-weight ratios. Forensic science students dust for fingerprints and solve crimes (don’t worry; they’re staged crimes). Students interested in architecture create renderings of famous structures, while those studying French can visit France to see if they can “talk the talk.” All students get to experiment using state-of-the-art equipment in our six science labs. And, biology students “go wild” in 1,137 acres of land and water at Hale Reservation. Reality-based, hands-on, and out-of-classroom experiences make learning fun, meaningful, memorable and, whenever possible, adventurous.

The Josephine M. Noble Chapel is a welcoming space for all members of our community to pray, reflect, and learn.
The chapel was completed in the fall of 2017. Every morning begins with prayer in the chapel for those who choose to attend and every Friday, Mass is held for the Xaverian community. All are welcome! At any time throughout the day, you may see a student or staff member pausing to pray, catch a theology class in progress, or see a student practicing his skills on the organ. Located in Xaverian’s main foyer, the chapel is truly the heart of the school.

The programs and activities offered by campus ministry help our students develop relationships with God, self, and others. Local and international service provides an enhanced worldview, giving students a better understanding of their role as global citizens.
Xaverian is committed to the moral and spiritual development of young men. Here, faith is talked about, but even more, it is lived – in our worship, in how we treat one another, and in our service to those in need. In a community of faith and respect, our students are challenged to live meaningful lives – in service to God, and to others. We welcome students and families from all faiths and backgrounds, appreciating the richness of diversity. Our inclusive community embraces experiences and perspectives from all walks of life.
Each year, Xaverian offers 12 retreats (both compulsory and optional) and nearly 50 formal service opportunities. Roughly 90% of students choose to participate in campus ministry programs (leadership, service, community building, and faith formation), above and beyond the graduation requirement.

Whether you want to improve your public speaking skills, learn to write for the stage and screen, master the moves that wow a crowd with pop dance, or dive into the art of acting, our theater program has something for everyone.

They can show off what they’ve learned at the winter and spring concerts, and at sporting events throughout the year via the Pep Band. Students who want to dive deeper into music theory and even earn college credit can take their study to a higher level with AP Music Theory. Other courses in Xaverian’s music program include Beginning Guitar and Piano, Chorus, Band, and Senior Recital.

Xaverian’s fine art program offers 11 courses for students of all grades in which young men are given a channel to express their visual intelligence and creativity. Whether it’s architectural design, digital photography, 3D sculpture, or cartooning, the works of art they create connect to their personal and social lives in meaningful ways.
Complementing the many art classes available and the biannual gallery shows that accompany them, students may also participate in the art club, Art National Honor Society, Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and The Concordian, Xaverian’s art and literary magazine. Qualified students can participate in AP Studio Art and build their portfolio to continue their artistic careers in college.

The Ruth Kennedy Library is a modern-day learning commons where both quiet study and collaboration are encouraged, and exploration and research are aided by digital resources.
Inside the library you will find multiple rooms set aside specifically for group projects and study sessions. Here, students share ideas and learn from each other (no whispering required). And, for times when students prefer the quiet, the library delivers by providing space ideally suited to prep for finals or to dig deep into compelling research. Resources are available both online and in print. The school’s extensive digital database is accessible anywhere, at any time. Book lovers will find a vast resource of literary options to hold in their hands and read in one of the comfortable library seating areas or in an individual study niche. Equipped with 16 workout stations, eight hammer strength weight machines, eight double-sided racks, three racks of dumbbells, two combo lat pull down machines, four exercise bikes, two treadmills, two ellipticals, two stairmasters, one stepper, and two rowing machines, there is ample space and equipment to accommodate Xaverian students of all levels. Every student at Xaverian is welcome to use the fitness center, and personalized training is available. The center is open from 6:00 - 8:00 a.m. before school and 2:30 - 5:00 p.m. after school, and athletic department staff are always on duty to ensure the safety of our students.

Since first opening our doors in 1963, the science curriculum at Xaverian has always been a strong suit. Today, it’s even more robust as students’ interests expand and many plan to study science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine in college. With Advanced Placement courses in subjects like computer science, calculus (AB/BC), statistics, physics (1/C), biology, chemistry, and environmental science, Xaverian provides exceptional opportunities for collegiate-level study.
Like the advanced chem lab featured here, Xaverian also has an advanced biology lab that is 1,700 square feet combining classroom and laboratory space, along with a physics lab, core bio lab, core chem lab, and a lab dedicated for Francis Xavier Division students (grades 7 and 8). The advanced biology lab equipment includes mini PCRs, gel electrophoresis equipment, and plenty of microscopes to allow for a 1:1 student to microscope ratio.
As technology evolves, so does Xaverian, advancing as an innovator with programs like “21st Century Science,” a one year, project-based life science course focused on subjects like diet/nutrition, infectious diseases, cancer biology, neuroscience, and mental health. All of our students have access to STEM-related curricula and activities.

• Grade 8 science curriculum, which is textbook free and focuses on robots, rockets, and health and the human body, and culminates with a group project called “Mission to Mars,” in which students research, present, and debate the feasibility of life on Mars
